Here at Bored To Death I do my best to present bands and projects that don’t get the recognition they so truly deserve. Bands that create a sound that reach people (like many of you) who follow the underground closely and strive to find some kind of clarity through organized sound. It’s been a thrill meeting, seeing, and hearing so many amazing bands the past few years as I’m starting to see the clearer side of things beyond just some stupid ”scene”. When I first listened to Black Elephant I was intrigued by what they presented. It was refreshing to have heard of a local LA band that was doing something different and at the same time working hard to put themselves out there.
I found myself listening to their tracks more and more so when I found out that they were on a hiatus I was devastated. I found so much potential in them which is rare (at least for me) to come across a band that keeps it real and has a spark that’s ready to set off. As I was coming to terms with the loss of the group, I found out that Felipe (singer/founder) got a group together and starting writing again for Black Elephant. The results being these 2 tracks;Happy Birthday and Sandra.
These tracks are a great segue into the future of Black Elephant. Instead of giving you an image of the urban fast-paced side of Los Angeles, the 2 new songs project an image of those dreamy California summers, driving down the coast as the sun is setting, joint in your hand with the wind brushing against your face. All this being held together with pop and post-punk aspects.
All in all this is awesome. The demo was recorded well and leaves me with nothing but assurance for these guys. The tracks are up on their bandcamp which I’m posting. Scope them out and follow them for future news, tracks, and shows. If any of you are up in the bay area, Black Elephant will be opening for Seapony this month (May 25) in San Francisco. It will be their first show together again. Check them out and support. Cheers.
